Will it be glory or shame, joy or despair?

No, I'm not talking about the spiritual and emotional consequences of good parenting - although there's plenty about that in this week's update - but rather the outcome of England's World Cup campaign!

By the time our next newsletter hits your inbox, the team's key matches will be partly played, and we'll probably know if we're going home early or heading for the latter stages of the competition.

In the meantime, we've focused in on some good sites keeping you up to date with outreach among the fans in South Korea and Japan, plus plenty more to get you surfing.

There's our second instalment from J John's Marriage Works chapter on conflict, more help for playgroups handling faith festivals, news, humour, events and much more.

God bless

ADVICE

Helping dads grow up!

  • Too many dads are failing to show good leadership, says a national parenting charity - as David Blunkett makes parents responsible for their children's bad behaviour.

Positive Parenting believes childhood delinquency will continue to rise until dads are given help to become positive role models for their family. The charity is launching a project called Time Out for Dads! and setting up a network of support groups for fathers across the UK.

The aim is to help dads - like Stephen Pestell (read his story in full on our website) - take stock of their relationship with their children, identify weaknesses and make positive changes.

"Dads don't know how to be role models any more because we don't have role models ourselves," says project leader Andy Jones. "First we were John Wayne, then the Nineties New Man making pasta - but now what?

"Instead of taking matters into our own hands as adults, we react emotionally to our children, dragging up hurts and hang-ups from our own childhood. Or we disengage totally. Either way, it has a serious effect on our children's emotional security.

"We at Positive Parenting want to help dads raise well-rounded adults, not eternal children."

In a speech on reform to the criminal justice system recently, the Home Secretary said parents will face fines if their children are suspected of drifting into crime. Home Office research shows that it is in the formative years - between eight and 13 - that it is possible to steer a child away from bad behaviour.

Andy talks further about his own experiences as a dad, and shares Stephen Pestell's own story, in the rest of this article, in our Advice section at http://www.cfnetwork.co.uk/members/advice.asp

> THIS WEEK'S NEWS

> Adoption law changes: children to suffer?

As the Adoption and Children Bill received its final reading in the House of Commons on Monday, the Lawyers’ Christian Fellowship (LCF) London said the moves to allow unmarried and same-sex couples the opportunity to adopt would not provide security and stability for children in care.

> Money talks, Dads!

Researchers quizzing 500 members of the public in Bath on behalf of Christian Viewpoint for Men found the subject most interviewees wish their fathers had talked to them about was 'money'.

> Captain Alan Price set to move on

The team behind Captain’s Crew at New Wine is to disband at the end of July with the news that Teknon Trust, which supports Captain Alan Price, is to be wound up by its trustees.

A CFN MEMBER WRITES ...

Dear Friends

I am interested in working with families (in what ever shape they come in!).

I have a vision of setting up a resource base for families - a place where families are respected and supported. It may have a "wacky warehouse" type play area for children, and a "time out" Christian environment for parents and children.

I see it as a place where prayer, counselling, parenting classes, debt management, local resources and so on are available, a valuable meeting place where bridge-building can be done, and families can be told just how special and valuable they are to God.

Do you "catch the vision"?

I would like to know whether there is such a place on Mersyside, and if there are like-minded people I could get in touch with.

I look forward to hearing from you - thank you for your time!

Gwen Cooke, Pseubeo@aol.com

> DON'T MISS

On 13 July 2002 thousands of Christians from all generations, denominations and races, are expected to gather at Reading's Madejski football stadium for a day of prayer, fasting, repentance and worship, to see the hearts of this nation turned back to God.

Much more information on this gathering, its background, how to get involved, and details of the Christian leaders supporting TheCall England can be found at http://thecallengland.com

> MARRIAGE MOT

Continuing our partnership with marriage resource site 2-in-2-1.co.uk, here's their regular marriage tip from Kate:

The trouble with you is …

There's a bit in the Bible about taking the log out of your own eye before trying to take the speck out of another's eye. "The trouble with you is …"

How often the log and speck are made of the same wood. It's a curious fact that we always find it easier to spot a particular fault in others when it's one of ours, too.

Putting others right helps us to avoid facing up to our own shortcomings.

Next time you feel the urge to criticise your spouse, why not stop and ask yourself a few questions first:

* Do I do the same thing myself?
* What attitude or behaviour have I got at present that's damaging our relationship?
* Is there anything in me I need to change?

> YOU'VE GOT TO LAUGH

A wise schoolteacher sends this note to all parents on the first day of school: "If you promise not to believe everything your child says happens at school, I'll promise not to believe everything he says happens at home."

A police recruit was asked during the exam: "What would you do if you had to arrest your own mother?" He said: "Call for backup."

A very dirty little boy came in from playing in the garden and asked his mother: "Who am I?" Ready to play the game she said, "I don't know! Who are you?" "Wow!" cried the child. "Mrs Johnson was right! She said I was so dirty, my own mother wouldn't recognize me!"
