Summer
international student outreach programme in full swing
Thousands of language students are now arriving in the UK to study English
during the summer holidays. And many will be met by Christians with the Gospel.
Outreach teams co-ordinated by Friends International, in partnership with local
churches and student ministries, are hoping that many of these students will
return home, not only with improved language skills but also with a new relationship
with Jesus.
A major outreach has been taking place in Bournemouth for more than 40 years.
This year there will be a team of 20 hoping to meet many of the thousands of
students who come to the towns 29 language schools.
Sue Burt, Friends International staff worker in Bournemouth, said: "It
is always particularly exciting to meet students from 'closed' countries who
might never have the chance to hear and respond to the Gospel back home."
Around 100 team members are currently involved with the Cambridge International
Outreach, which runs until 23 August. They are expecting to meet up to 1,000
international students.
Bartow Wylie, working with the Cambridge team, said: "This year it is
great to be able to welcome three team members from France, Switzerland and
Japan who professed faith as a result of summer outreaches in previous years.
It is also exciting to see the enthusiasm of some Chinese and Korean students
who have become Christians here in the past few weeks."
A team of 50 representing 13 different nationalities from Benin to Belarus,
Malaysia to Australia are in Oxford until 9 August. Spokesman Chris Band said: "Every
year we are amazed to meet students (especially from China) who have never
heard of Jesus, and have to be taught how to pronounce his name!"
Everybody needs good neighbours ...
Stories of "neighbours from hell" never fail to make the headlines.
Arguments over rights of way or overhanging hedges are the stuff of disputes
all over the country, but could you turn the tables and become a neighbour
from heaven?
Care for the Family, launching its annual good neighbours campaign, wants to
hear of people who have made a real difference for good in a local community.
The week-long campaign runs from 15-21 September this year, but organisers
would like to receive nominations as soon as possible for the Neighbours from
Heaven Awards. Prizes will be awarded by Rosemary Conley in London.
The diet and fitness author said: "Modern life has become so isolating
and Neighbours from Heaven is just the motivation we need to break down those
barriers and discover friends we never knew we had."
