Record numbers call pregnancy helpline

CAREconfidential is responding to a record numbers of calls this year.

More than 3,000 women have contacted the pregnancy and post abortion helpline so far, and organisers expect the total to reach 6,500 by the end of 2003. The helpline was established by Christian charity CARE (Christian Action, Research and Education) in 1999 to offer confidential counselling to anyone facing pregnancy or post-abortion concerns.

Mercy Ships to launch largest ever floating medical centre

The worldÕs largest non-governmental medical ship, the Africa Mercy, is expected to set sail in early 2005.

Since 1999, Mercy Ships has been converting a Danish rail ferry into a fully equipped floating hospital and development ship. The 499-ft vessel will include six operating theatres, a 78-bed hospital ward and an intensive care unit. Current Mercy Ship, Anastasis, will sail into Sunderland on 10 September.

Teenagers self-harming - figures continue to soar

Accident and emergency staff at hospitals around the country continue to report significant increases in the number of young people coming in having harmed themselves, reports BBC Radio Five Live.
