Clash of cultures as skaters 'disrupt' cathedral services

Skateboarders around the entrance to Bristol Cathedral have prompted cathedral authorities to work with the city council and the police to try and hammer out a strategy for the management of College Green.

Diocesan newspaper, The Three Crowns, reported: “The problem grew increasingly worse during the summer heatwave, disturbing both regular worshippers and tourists. The worst aspect was said to be the noise made by the skateboards if ridden into the cathedral porch, with complainants saying it reverberated around the building and disrupted services.”

A formal complaint has been made about the Council’s failure to enforce a bylaw against skateboarding.
The Dean, the Very Rev Robert Grimley, said: “We shall follow with interest this hearing, and the eventual adjudication on the complaint: it will give us some indication of what are considered to be reasonable expectations on both sides.”

New school to teach creationism

A new £20m school, which will teach “creationism”, opened on Teesside on Monday.

The King’s Academy, in Middlesbrough, is a partnership between the Department for Education and the Wearside-based Vardy Foundation. It is a sister facility to Gateshead’s Emmanuel College, which already has a “creationism” curriculum.

The boss of Sunderland-based car dealership Reg Vardy has provided much of the cash for the school – and plans more throughout the UK. All teach creationism alongside the theory of evolution. (www.ekklesia.co.uk)
