Greater
compassion needed for homosexuals, says Selwyn Hughes
CWR is urging Christians to look again
at the Bibles message to homosexuals.
At a time when the issue of homosexuality is dividing the Church, this organisation
has published a major new work: A Question of Love answers to questions
on homosexuality.
CWR founder and author of the Every Day with Jesus bible notes Selwyn
Hughes said: Christians find it difficult to hold meaningful conversations
on the subject and this has led, all too often, to prejudice towards those
living in a homosexual lifestyle. Our aim is to lay down some clear biblical
principles, which will give a clear understanding of Gods view on the
subject and lead to a greater compassion towards homosexual persons.
The books author, Dr Angelo Grazioli is a GP and sex therapist. He calls
on Christians and churches to welcome homosexuals, whilst arguing clearly that
homosexuality cannot be accepted as a godly expression of sexuality.
However, Dr Grazioli contends that Christians too often are suspicious of same
sex relationships, where intense and non-sexual love can be experienced. Drawing
from a range of biblical stories, he suggests that such an unthinking and uncaring
approach often causes great sexual anxiety.
Whilst accepting that some Christians may have homosexual orientation and may
even live with other homosexuals, he argues that celibacy is the only biblical
response. Those who love others of the same sex without having sexual relations
he defines as homophyllics.
I have enormous respect for homophyllics who remain celibate. They get
criticised from both sides. They are really between a rock and a hard place.
On one side the Church might criticise them because they are not acting normally by
getting married. On the other side are the homosexuals who think they are weird
because they are not having sex.
We would do well to become a little more Christlike and not look askance
at two homophyllics who are sharing a deep, loving relationship, be they male
or female.
