Church role ‘vital’ for family guidance, says survey

New research by the Mothers’ Union (MU) revealed that the Church still plays a significant role in family life.

In a recent survey carried out for the MU by MORI, people felt that after schools, church was the place they would go to when in need of guidance or advice.

Reg Bailey, chief executive of the MU, said: “It is clear from our research that – after schools – the Church is the one place families feel they can turn for advice, and help with family issues such as relationships and conflict in families.

“As the MU has such a broad network of members around the world, we are in a unique position to be in contact with these families, and give real help where it is needed. Our research shows that Christian organisations have a vital role to play in making the support of family life a priority for churches and government.”

Fleur Dorrell, head of prayer and spirituality at the MU, said: “The policy unit within the Mothers’ Union plays a clear and valuable role in ensuring that faith and politics are not mutually exclusive. We know how important it is that faith groups make a stand on significant issues and the Church should be part of that.”

For many single people, friends have replaced church for moral guidance on family issues, and yet, more people without children than with would prefer to rely on the Church for moral guidance on family issues.

Youthwork goes into extra time

Oasis Youth Action recently launched what is believed to be the UK’s first interdenominational training course for volunteer youth workers.

The What Every Volunteer Youth Worker Should Know sessions were set up to offer a flexible programme of professional training for the estimated 100,000 church volunteers who regularly work with young people in their spare time.

The course will provide volunteer youth workers with much-needed access to training on the basics of youth work, complementing existing programmes that offer professional training and accreditation for full-time youth workers.

Danny Brierley, head of Oasis Youth Action, said: “The Church mobilises literally tens of thousands of volunteers to work with young people week in, week out. These ‘extra-timers’ often devote themselves tirelessly to young people with little recognition and even less training.”

The course is overseen by Oasis Youth Action, in partnership with Salvation Army, Spring Harvest, Youth for Christ and Youthwork Magazine. Call 0207 450 9044 for more information or go to http://www.oasistrust.org/ProjectHomepage.asp?id=763
