Summer
appeal focuses on youth
Church
Army, the society of Anglican evangelists, has put children and
young people firmly at the centre of its summer appeal for 2004.
Around the time Church Army was
founded, 55% of English children were enrolled in Christian Sunday Schools
and today this figure is less than 4%.
In his letter to supporters, Church Armys Chief Secretary, Philip Johanson
OBE points out that: It is vitally important for Church Army to continue
its work with children and young people, helping them to understand the relevance
of the Christian faith for them in the 21st century.
Church Army relies entirely on individuals and parishes for its funding and
this years summer campaign has chosen to highlight a real issue of concern
within the Church and show what Church Army projects are doing about it.
The fundraising letter and leaflet highlight projects in Liverpool, Oxford,
Cardiff, Nottingham, Bradford, Newcastle, Greenwich and Stoke where Church
Army evangelists are making a real difference and building new foundations
with young people.
We are committed to building the foundations of effective community wherever
we find ourselves working comments Philip Johanson, who continues: I
gave the keynote address on the theme of Future Church at Christian
Resources Exhibition this year and stressed the importance of ensuring that the
mission context of church must be shaped by what is needed and not by what we
might prefer it to be.
Fewer people than ever before have any meaningful links with church and
its culture, and we are at the cutting edge of building new foundations with
young people. Church Army supports all this long-term work, and needs funds to
ensure that similar projects can be established in many more areas.
