Word-on-the-web reaching over a hundred nations

Church Army’s word-on-the-web now has subscribers based in more than 100 countries around the globe with the addition of new subscribers this month from Angora, Belize and Sierra Leone.

Around 5,800 now make use of the innovative internet and e-mail ministry, and aside from the UK, with more than 4,200 subscribers, the other nations topping the subscriptions chart are the USA with 803; Australia 85; Canada 62; India 37; New Zealand 36; Nigeria and Ireland 30.

Word-on-the-web was backed recently by Christian bands Delirious?, thebandwithnoname and yFriday who urged young Christians and youth leaders in particular to make use of something they consider ideal for the internet generation.

Ruth Walker, word-on-the-web’s administrator adds: “It is so encouraging to see word-on-the-web being used internationally, and especially in the countries where it is hard for people to access Bibles. I pray that God will bless this ministry further and it will continue to develop and grow.”

Each day subscribers receive a short, challenging Bible study along with a prayer, delivered straight into their e-mail inbox. There is also an on-line New to Christianity course for those who wish to discover more about the Christian faith.

Crackdown on sexual images call

Nearly nine out of 10 people believe ministers should impose tougher restrictions on sexual images on children’s TV and in children’s magazines to discourage under-age sex, a survey revealed today.

The poll of more than 1,000 Britons found that 86 per cent wanted the Government to act over unsuitable images in television programmes and magazines aimed at children which might make youngsters want to have sex at a younger age.

Support for such a move was strongest among those aged 55-64 (92 per cent), but was also backed by 78 per cent of 18-to-24-year-olds, according to the BBC’s Healthy Britain survey.

It comes amid growing concern over rising rates of sexually transmitted infections and teenage pregnancies in the UK.

The survey found 78 per cent supported the Government spending money on free condoms to discourage unprotected sex - rising to 91 per cent in the 18-24 age group.

But opinion was divided on whether condoms should be freely available to under-16s, with 49 per cent for and 48 per cent against.

Special family day for bereaved parents

As part of the Bereaved Parents' Network, Care for the Family is holding a Family Day this autumn, with special guest speaker Brenda Kelso. This is an opportunity for all who've experienced the death of a child in the family to meet with others for support and encouragement.

This special day is designed to help family members gain a better understanding of each other's loss and grief at the death of a child. Barbie and Peter Reynolds, managers of the Bereaved Parents Network said: "Tragedy can strike any family at any time and the pain of losing a child is devastating, not only for the parents, but for the other brothers and sisters as well. It is our hope that this day will help parents and children build stronger relationships with each other and maybe, even for the first time, tell each other how they feel. The Family Day is very much about looking forward and helping the whole family to move on and look to the future with new hope and encouragement."

At the Family Day siblings will be able to meet with others whose brother or sister has died and find that they are not alone. Parents will meet together and hear from bereavement specialists on how they can move forward and help their children come to terms with their grief. Bereavement counsellors will be available.

  • The Family Day is being held on Saturday 9 October 2004 from 10.15am-5pm at The Schofield Centre, Greenclose Lane, Loughborough, Leicester. Registration is from 9.45am-10.15am. The cost is £25 per family or £10 per person (15+) and £6 per child (14 and under). Lunch and refreshments are provided. For further details or a booking form contact Care for the Family, PO Box 488, Cardiff, CF15 7YY or call (029) 2081 0800.
