Charity warning: police must work together more closely to tackle internet child abuse

Leading children's charity NCH's internet expert John Carr has warned an international conference in Morocco that there needs to be much closer co-operation between police forces to halt the sale of child pornography on the internet.

Carr told the second Arab African Conference against Exploitation, Violence and Sexual Abuse of Children that the sale of child pornography on the internet is attracting organised criminal gangs.

He said: "There is big money to be made in the sale of child pornography. This has attracted organised criminal gangs who don't draw neat lines around their activities. They know no moral boundaries, so many of the children who they first abuse to produce the images are now also being trafficked into the sex industry on a global basis.

"To deal with these appalling crimes there is a pressing need for much greater and closer co-operation between national police forces and between national police forces and Interpol. We need to stop these gangs in their tracks - and not always be playing catch up."

Mr Carr added that rapid technological growth across much of the developing world is likely to see a major increase in child exploitation, if steps are not taken to prosecute the people who make and buy this material.

Britons getting more neigbourly, says survey

The vast majority of people in England and Wales trust their neighbours according to the main findings from the 2003 Home Office Citizenship Survey, published last week.

The survey suggests that neighbourliness is on the rise, with two out of three people socialising with friends or neighbours at least once a month, and an increasing number feeling that people in their neighbourhood could be trusted.

More and more people are also getting involved in improving their communities, with an increase of 1.6 million people who participate in civic activities or volunteering since 2001.
