Surviving as a Christian student

West Yorkshire School of Christian studies (WYSOCS) are looking for young people for their gap year course which will equip them for university and beyond.

“Christian students will encounter post-modernism, New Age thinking and many other world views within the first few weeks of starting University. They need to be equipped to counteract them,” said course tutor, Mark Roques. “This course will do precisely that.”

Commenting on the course, Tom Wright, the Bishop of Durham said “This programme offers a remarkable opportunity for real growth in understanding of the Christian worldview.”

The course lasts 10 months, and includes a six-month placement abroad. Students on these courses have been to Uganda, Zambia, Portugal and Romania. Mark is the author of the successful book Fields of God – football and the kingdom of God. For further information, please contact WYSOCS on 0113 258 9300 or e-mail on admin@wysocs.org.uk

Use cash only throughout March!

Rob Parsons and Care for the Family are spearheading a campaign this month, asking Christians and others to use cash rather than plastic cards wherever possible, in order to highlight the problem of debt and easy credit.

Rob, author of new book The Money Secret, says: "What we suggest is that your standing orders or direct debits continue as usual. But through the month of March, use only cash for all your shopping -instead of using credit cards, debit cards or store cards. You may be amazed at the different way you view your spending, when you're using real money that actually runs out towards the end of each week! In fact, one expert has suggested that when we use credit cards we spend up to a third more.

"If you are experiencing the pressures of debt yourself at the moment, resolve to talk to someone and start finding help today. You'll find some useful links at www.themoneysecret.info . And most of all, know that you can find hope and a way forward."

1,100 plus abortions on 14s and under in 2003

Due to a request under the Freedom of Information Act, the Department of Health (DoH) has disclosed that in the calendar year 2003, there were 1023 abortions performed on 14-year-olds and 148 for those under 14.

The DoH had previously refused to release this information which was additionally requested by Student LifeNet.

Patrick Leahy, Director of Student LifeNet commented: "These horrifying statistics will clearly be of great concern to parents across the country. In some cases, due to government guidelines, these extremely young girls could have obtained abortions without parental knowledge. Yet again, the government shows no concern for the welfare of students.

"Student LifeNet is also deeply concerned about the impact abortion has on younger students - particularly since they are less likely to understand the ethical issues at stake.

"Furthermore, the Department of Health still refuses to inform the public about the exact number of abortions on 11, 12, and 13-year-olds. We dread to think what they could be hiding."
