Encouragement
for single parents and stepfamilies
Single parents and stepfamilies recently attended specialist family day conferences
organised by national charity Care for the Family. Both the Single Parent
Journey and Life in a Stepfamily met the needs of parents who had
travelled to Mutley Baptist Church in Plymouth from across the West Country
and even further afield.
Both conferences approached family issues from a Christian perspective and
also gave those attending the chance to meet others facing similar situations.
Single parent Terri, who has three children, said: "I came expecting to
blend into the background and maybe learn some strategies for coping. Instead
I came away with friends!"
Life in a Stepfamily covered some difficult areas of stepfamily life, including
developing a married relationship 'in front of the children' and dealing with
the 'other' parent. "Dealing with another parent is a difficult subject," explains
Christine Tufnell, the project manager for Life in a Stepfamily. "We enable
parents in stepfamilies to develop strategies that will help them avoid conflict
and find what is best for their children."
Join us on the Single Parent Journey was run by Liz Gardner, Care for
the Family’s Single Parent family Project Manager. She commented that: "The
perception of single parents in this country is very negative. We provide a
safe place where parents can share the realities of lone parenting away from
the stereotypes and the prejudice. It can be especially hard for Christian
single parents to get the support and acceptance they need, so days like these
provide hope and encouragement for the future."
Both Liz and Christine were pleased at the success of running two conferences
in the same venue and it is hoped that similar days can be planned in future.
