CHILDREN'S SONGS Which church songs do your children love? So often in churches and schools, children and young people have to sing the songs that are picked for them by teachers, ministers, vicars and preachers. Often they are not consulted at all about what they would like to sing. This is when they are given anything at all, for far too often in our worship little or no recognition is made for the presence of children and young people. UK-wide charity The Family Friendly Churches Trust is launching Songs Kids Love to change this and is going to let children and young people have their say. At their website www.familyfriendlychurches.org.uk children and young people can now nominate the kids song, hymn or worship song that they most like. Nominations will stay open for three months and then the vote will start. Any child or young person up to the age of 16 is allowed to nominate one song. These must be Christian songs that they enjoy singing, rather than just listening to in a performance. At the end of the vote, which will be on Christmas Eve, the trust hopes to produce a CD of backing tracks of the winners, so that these can be easily sung in schools and churches. The trust is very aware that many churches and schools really struggle to find musicians that can play lively and enjoyable songs, and hope that this contest and the CD will help with this problem. To encourage children and young people further there is a prize of a MIDI keyboard for the person who nominates the winning song. Rev Dr Mike Bossingham, the founder and general manager of the trust, says: "So many churches have become no-go areas for children that we must work hard to correct the balance. We hope that this ballot will help adults think more carefully about the music they select for worship when children and young people are present." ©
