TWO-MINUTE DEVOTION

with PASTOR BOB RIETH

Jesus began the prayer he taught his disciples with the words: "Our Father". There were no better words to explain the love, concern and compassion God has for us.

"As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him." Psalm 103:13

"My son, do not despise the Lord's discipline and do not resent his rebuke, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in." Proverbs 3:11-12

The father is the role model of the family, whether he wants that role or not. What a responsibility it is to be a father. If only we could be perfect as our Heavenly Father is perfect, then we could be all that we should be. But we are not.

We step into the role of father with no training and no experience. We hold that tiny baby awkwardly in our arms and we pray that somehow we can be a good father to the child. This tiny life is a miracle and a precious gift, as well as a privilege and responsibility. God, who knows the potential of this child, entrusts him or her to us to nurture and instruct.

We can only pray that God will help us as he promised in Psalm 32:8: "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you."

Our children are our greatest investment and our greatest heritage.

May the Lord bless our attempts with success. May He multiply our good intentions and minimize the effects of our mistakes. May we bring our children to our Heavenly Father and rejoice together in the Family of God. This I humbly pray.
