Answer to a big question

Who Made Me? by Shirley Tulloch. Lion £9.99

THIS is the story of a little African girl who desperately wanted to know the answer to her big question – who made me? She had seven special friends, and she decided to ask her question of each one in turn. Each of them thought that whoever had made her must have been just like them!
Lion thought it was someone powerful and courageous; whilst Giraffe thought it was someone gentle and kind. Eagle was sure it must be someone who can see and understand everything and Baboon knew it was someone close to him who made him laugh.
A bird thought it was someone who would lead towards good things, Zebra that it was someone unique and Elephant that it was someone strong and wise who never forgets you.
Zanele had trouble deciding which answer was the right one, until one of her friends added that sometimes there can be seven answers to the same question, and she understood that they were all correct.
I read the story with my grand-daughter, Emily, who is seven and she explained to me that it must be God who had made Zanele because he was the only person who could possibly be all those things at the same time.
She has picked up the book several times to re-read it, and she really enjoyed the illustrations, which are full of depth and vibrant colour, as did Lindsey, a year younger and fresh from an African holiday last summer. However, although Lindsey liked the story, she needed her father’s help to understand the truth behind the book.
I’d happily give this book to a First School age child – the younger children will enjoy the pictures and the story, and an older child with some understanding of God could work out for themselves what it really means.
