Delightful gifts

Grandmother; Mum-to-be by Marion Stroud, Illustrated by Rebecca Gibbon (Lion £4.99 each)

‘Mother of five and grandmother of 11’ certainly should be enough qualification to provide "inspiration for expectant mums and grandmothers everywhere" and Marion Stroud has added two amusing, gentle and delightful books to the Lion gift series.

In a day when family life is diverse to say the least, it’s impossible to cater for everyone; these books – shot through with relevant quotes from the Bible - pre-suppose an exultant mum-to-be, a supportive family, a permanent and committed father, a healthy baby, a wise and devoted grandmother.

But that’s not a criticism, just an observation to be wise about the recipient if this is a gift. The description of ‘all kinds of dads’ eg method man, superdad, 'frankly fearful father' will make any mum-to-be smile, and grandmothers who know that ‘the simplest toy that even the youngest child can operate is called a grandparent’ will find something on every page to laugh at, think about or be challenged by.
