  • New UK Christian ISP and portal Xalt promises safe surfing, e-mail and webspace, plus your time online earns funds for Christian causes. You can even get a special webstrip on your home page with regular updates from Christian Family Network and Christian Herald! Sign up online, or mail info@xalt.co.uk or call 0870 011 7070.

  • As a result of users indicating their dissatisfaction with current search options during research - too many US sites in results, and too much US advertising - the BBC has launched a new Internet search engine called BBCi Search. It challenges these issues by delivering both UK and foreign websites, (although hierarchical preference is given to the most relevant UK destinations), has no adverts and is tagged a 'family-friendly' search facility due to the use of sophisticated software to remove any pornographic/derogatory material from the search database.

  • Another site to investigate if you're looking for a Christian portal is Theway.co.uk. Online since November 1999, it offers a mix of features and resources, plus a full safe surfing option for £2 a month via a special Microsoft browser, available for download.

  • Latest in a steady line of children's portals offering a protected environment (ie only access to approved sites) is Planetkids.co.uk. It offers links to 50,000 vetted child-friendly sites, ranging from games and entertainment, to homework help and information. You can register free on the site, and the service has been backed by Nigel Williams, director of Childnet, the charity which works worldwide to build awareness of the dangers to children of unregulated Internet access

  • Worried about your children's safety on the Internet? Check out www.parentalguidance.co.uk for some fairly independent reviews of filtering and blocking software, and other useful pointers. And don't forget to check out our page on child-friendly search engines.

  • Safe surfing continues to be one of the biggest challenges facing families using the Internet. Here are a couple of sites well worth a look - Gambeson is US-based search engine with a family filter which looks pretty effective, although it can still be turned off; and Disney's UK site has a safe surfing section headed by cartoon character Doug. Lots of fun content in what looks to be a safe environment. Try them and give us your views

  • Looking for unmetered access?A stack of ISPs have withdrawn or modified deals in recent times, so read their sales pitch carefully. For most, you'll end up paying from £6 per month upwards for call-free access, usually evenings and weekends. Others just charge 1p per minute. Places to look: LineOne, NTL World, Freeserve, and BT Internet. Keeping an eye on the whole free ISP scene is the excellent Net4Nowt site, which could well be your starting point.

  • While we're on the subject of hunting for things, you might be wondering which search engines to use for specifically UK-based searches. Well, there's a growing and bewildering amount of choice, but the biggest and best are probably Ask Jeeves, Altavista, Mirago, Lycos and Yahoo

  • Concerned about Internet privacy? You might want to alert your MP to the implications of a Bill proposed by the Government allowing them to snoop on your e-mail, transactions, passwords and all many of other communications by visiting Stand (http://www.stand.org.uk)

  • Want to help clear up the Internet? One site worth a visit is the Safe Internet Foundation (http://www.sif.nl/) which can use your online skills and alertness to tackle the content we'd rather not see. A good site for advice and resources.

  • AltaVista have launched a new, no-frills search engine aimed at giving you fast results from their
ever-expanding database of sites. Raging Search has customisable features so you can limit the number of results, choose language translation facilities and exclude dodgy material with the Family Filter. Certainly worth checking out.
